Resident Evil:Directors Cut (Playstation 1)

Released in September 1997, Resident Evil: Director's Cut for the PlayStation is an enhanced re-release of the groundbreaking 1996 survival horror classic. While it largely retains the core gameplay, story, and fixed camera angles that defined the original, the Director's Cut introduced several key changes and additions designed to offer both new and returning players a fresh experience. The most notable additions were new game modes: “Standard” (which mirrored the difficulty of the original Japanese release, often easier than the Western original), “Training” (an easier mode with more ammo and weaker enemies), and the much-touted “Arranged” (or “Advanced”) mode. This “Arranged” mode significantly remixed item and enemy placements, altered some camera angles, introduced new character costumes, and even added a few minor environmental tweaks, providing a challenging and unpredictable playthrough even for veterans.

The Director's Cut also aimed to re-introduce some of the censored content from the original Japanese release, particularly in the infamous live-action opening cinematic. However, due to a “localization error,” the Western versions of the Director's Cut largely still contained the censored footage, a point of contention for many fans. Later in 1997, a “Dual Shock” version of the Director's Cut was released, adding rumble support and, more controversially, a completely new soundtrack. This new soundtrack, particularly some of its more bizarre and dissonant tracks (like the infamous basement theme), proved divisive among players. Despite these mixed reactions to certain changes, Resident Evil: Director's Cut remains an important entry in the series' history, offering additional content and a different take on the Spencer Mansion's horrors.
