Street Fighter 2 Sega Megadrive

“Street Fighter II” on the Sega Mega Drive (known as “Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition” in North America and “Street Fighter II' Plus: Champion Edition” in Japan) was a monumental release in 1993. It was a fiercely anticipated port of Capcom's groundbreaking arcade fighting game, which had previously seen a highly successful, though slightly altered, port to Nintendo's Super Nintendo. For Mega Drive owners, this release was a significant moment, finally bringing the definitive 16-bit fighting experience to their console and igniting intense debates among console warriors about which version was superior.

The Mega Drive version aimed to deliver an experience as close to the arcade's Street Fighter II: Champion Edition and Street Fighter II Turbo as possible. It notably featured a “Hyper Fighting” mode with adjustable speed settings (up to 10 stars, offering much faster gameplay than the SNES Turbo), allowed for mirror matches (where two players could select the same character), and made all four Shadaloo boss characters (Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison) playable from the start. While the sound effects and voice samples were often criticized for being less clear or “garbled” compared to the SNES version due to the Mega Drive's different sound chip, many fans argued that the music was more faithful to the arcade's FM synth sound. The game also retained the arcade's intro sequence, which was missing from the SNES port. Its release was a key factor in Sega's strong performance in the console wars of the early 90s, offering a competitive edge in the genre that Street Fighter II had single-handedly defined.
