Monopoly (Nintendo Wii)

Released in 2008 by Electronic Arts, Monopoly for the Nintendo Wii brought the iconic board game to a new generation of players. The video game adaptation streamlined the classic experience, automating tedious tasks like counting money and collecting rent, which significantly sped up the pace of the game compared to the physical version. Players could use the Wii Remote to “roll” the dice with a shaking motion and point at the screen to make selections. The game offered both the traditional board and a modern “Monopoly: Here & Now” board with contemporary cities, along with other unlockable themed boards, giving players a variety of visual styles to choose from.

In addition to the classic rules, the Wii version introduced new game modes to appeal to a wider audience. “Richest” mode, for example, was a faster-paced game that incorporated mini-games and a different set of rules focused on property trading and value. While the game was praised for its convenience and quickened gameplay, it was also noted for some of its shortcomings. The AI was often criticized for being simple to outsmart, and the lack of online multiplayer was seen as a missed opportunity, especially given the game's social nature. Despite these flaws, Monopoly on the Wii served as a functional and entertaining way to play the board game on a console, especially for local multiplayer with friends and family.
