Gran Turismo Sport on the PlayStation 4 shifted the series' focus towards online competitive racing, emphasizing esports and a more structured, professional driving experience. It introduced the “FIA Gran Turismo Championships,” a partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, which brought officially sanctioned online races to the game.
